Pietersite is a variety of opaque fibrous Quartz .

Tradition:

Its name comes from that of Sid Pieters who discovered it in Namibia in 1962. The Pietersite includes many asbestiform inclusions of crocidolite, a variety of fibrous riebeckite from the family of amphiboles, as in the Tiger's Eye and the 'Hawk Eye.

Pietersite inclusions may have been oxidized by iron, yellow to brown in color, or non-oxidized, gray to bluish in color. The beauty of this stone is caused by the presence of different zones of inclusions with a silky appearance located side by side, in the form of disordered spots or mosaic.

The best quality undoubtedly comes from Namibia but the deposit produces less and less. China is also a known producer, in inferior quality. The rough being relatively expensive, the Pietersite is most often cut in a wide and thin cabochon in order to favor the surface over the weight.

The Pietersite is mainly mounted in jewelry (necklace, pendant, bracelet). It is also coveted by collectors. It is not treated, nor synthesized and it is difficult to imitate. The most sought after Pietersites are those with well-demarcated well-marked colored areas so that the light can return a beautiful shimmer from all sides.
