Morganite

morganite.jpg

The morganite stone is a fine stone which owes in particular its pink color, to the presence of manganese in its composition. Rich in cesium, the color of this stone generally changes depending on the way it is lit; it is therefore a gem that has a good pleochroism. It can have different pink hues, ranging from pale, carmine or orange. In all cases, the most sought-after morganite stone remains the one whose color recalls the "Peach Blossom". It is also in Madagascar (its possible place of origin) that we find the best samples. Sometimes called pezzotaite, this specimen is becoming increasingly rare. It is often associated with pink tourmaline and its size can be around 20 cm.

Today, it is very common to meet morganite stones whose color has been heat treated, to be improved. These stones, however, have a little less value than those which are not treated. In this regard, the value of this gemstone is determined by elements such as the size of the stone or the intensity and saturation of its pink color. Purity is also one of the quality criteria to take into account in order to form an opinion on the value of this stone. This beautiful mineral is also a stone whose appearance is very pure and more or less transparent, to the naked eye. It often presents itself without imperfections and inclusions. In addition, although this is rare, it is sometimes revealed with an optical effect of asterism and shimmer.

It is also a stone with a hexagonal crystal system, so it has 6 faces. It is a gem which is generally cut faceted to degrees. In addition, insofar as it is a stone of the family of beryls, it is of the same family as aquamarine and emerald. It therefore has good durability. On the Mohs scale, its hardness is between 7.5 and 8. It is generally in the pegmatites of metamorphic rocks that we discover this variety of stone. They are found today in Brazil and in Madagascan countries, but also in places such as Namibia, Afghanistan or Mozambique. China, Russia and the USA are also countries where you can find this mineral. The largest morganites, however, were found in 1968 in Brazil. They had been revealed by a 3m * 9m geode, that is, on a rocky cavity lined with morganite crystals and dark green tourmaline needles.
