The heliotrope stone takes its name from the Greek words “helios” and “trepeinï” meaning respectively “sun” and “to turn”. It is also commonly called “blood jasper” and “blood stone”. The Heliotrope is a mixture of crystallized chalcedony, quartz and iron. Its various names are attributed to it for the first time by Pliny the Elder who named it so because when the heliotrope stone was oriented towards the sun and was immersed in water, he saw spots and patches of blood. It was also one of its main uses in the past since in Antiquity, the heliotrope was used to influence the climate and to invoke storms when it was placed in water under the sun's rays . During this period, heliotrope jasper stone was widely used in jewelry, particularly for glyptics: intaglio, seals, lithic base for esoteric, even magical inscriptions, or votive sculptures.

Later in the Middle Ages, the heliotrope jasper stone was considered the stone of the blood of Jesus. Christians carried their beliefs like this and thought that if they carried this stone, it would make them invisible. Other believers believed that jasper was placed on the ground when Jesus was crucified on his cross and that this is how the heliotrope jasper was created. In this sense, this stone was considered the stone of all evils and was commonly called in this region of the world: the “stone of martyr”. The Greek philosopher Damigueron, on the other hand, wore a power of resistance against all forms of deception, which is why it was not rare to see it represented in scenes of martyrdom or flogging. The heliotrope was much used by therapists of the time especially to cure tumors. It was reduced to powder and then mixed with eggs and honey. For bleeding and wounds, it was used in the form of a paste. The heliotrope jasper was also used to cure snake bites, in particular so that it sucks the venom directly deposited on the wound. Needless to say, these are methods used in the past and it is necessary to seek medical help if necessary.

Today, heliotrope jasper stone is still used in jewelry for making small statuettes, cabochons, pendants but also heliotrope bracelets and heliotrope necklaces. We can also see the design of small utensils.

The heliotrope stone is essentially composed of green and a small point of red. It is composed of a plasma base not to be confused with the green jasper which contains a mixture of detrital quartz containing chlorite, where we recognize variants mainly due to the minor minerals present which can contain hematite inclusions .
