Property :

 

Crystallized silica divided into concentric colored zones, Family of quartz, Silicon dioxide: SiO2.

Form generally in geode, frequent association of quartz crystals concentric convolutions, parallel lines, dendritic mosses, polyhedral geometric figures, orbicular effects.

It is a form of chalcedony characterized by thin bands of different color. It is deposited from water heavily loaded with silica and lines the cavities of certain lavas. The variations in color are partly caused by the modification of the chemical elements present in the water when the layers are deposited. Density 2.6. Hardness 6.5 to 7.

Blue, gray, brown, beige,… pink. Almost all of the colors are represented. The agate from South America is generally in shades of gray. It is often tinted blue, red, green, brown, black, yellow by suitable chemical baths. In lithotherapy we prefer to avoid them.

In the past, it was thought to promote longevity and obtain wealth. Its name derives from the Greek akhatês, which simply designated this variety of chalcedony.
